11.11.15 Shooting in the RAW mode | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hello Friends! I was looking over some of Chelle’s Digital Scrapbooking Tutorials and came across this information about shooting photos in the RAW mode on your camera. I wanted to re-post it to all of our new newsletter subscribers.

Photo Fix Tip:  SHOOT IN RAW!
The other day I was browsing my pictures from a past July…nighttime shot of playing with sparklers and saw this:

I was so bummed.  You could hardly see anything…and it’s not the first time I’ve messed up the exposure on my dark photos.  FORTUNATELY I’ve learned from my mistakes.  So when I’m shooting in low light situations (or other problematic exposure situations) I change up the settings on my camera.  I “shoot in RAW mode”.  This means instead of saving the photo as a JPEG, it’s saves the photo data in a different way (different camera brands have their own extension…but we’ll call it RAW).  My camera will save it both ways simultaneously, & I like that mode best.

So…I opened up the same RAW photo & tweaked the numbers…mostly the EXPOSURE and got this:

Woot!  So then I created this:

SO…check out your camera manual…learn how to shoot RAW (if your camera can) so the next time you are in the dark & your exposure is off, you can save the photos!

ps.  Why don’t I ALWAYS shoot in RAW?  Well…
#1.  My last camera could either shoot raw OR jpeg (not both), and I could only view the photos if I brought them into the Adobe converter…a LOT of work just to look at my photos.  But now my operating system can preview both jpgs & raw files, so that’s not so much a reason anymore…
#2.  RAW files are relatively HUGE compared to jpegs.  In the picture above, the jpg is 3MB and the raw is 8MB, so when saving both, I was filling up my SD card VERY fast.  Um…I upgraded my SD card (the old one was 5 years old…and it was big back then…) so now that’s not so much of a reason anymore either….
Guess I should switch back to RAW+JPEG again. :)

Our CT Member Jenn J. Tried using the RAW mode with her camera. She used Fleur de Violette.

Now look at how the picture started out.

Amazing! Try it out if you camera has a RAW mode. It might turn out to be your favorite new way to shoot photos.

Enjoy!

10.28.15 Story Sparks | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hi Friends! Have you ever used Storymatics Rememory Cards to jump start your digital scrapping? Chelle mentioned them to me in one of our mammoth Gmail conversations. I think 73 was the highest one yet, but I digress…
Chelle said, “Here are a few cards from my Rememory deck. In theory you draw 3 cards, think briefly, then start telling what you remember. As you start to remember more and more of the story will come to you.
So here are a few. Choose 1 from each column. They are: the setting on the left…the players in the right, and the memory sparks in the middle.”

So here’s what Jenny came up with.  Jenny said, She used autumn, what makes them laugh and brother or sister or friend.” She used Falling 4 U.

10.14.2015 Stories With No Photos | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesdays

Hello Friends!

Do you ever have a digital scrapbooking layout that doesn’t have much journaling because the story – is actually the writing of the story? Our creative team has so they made a couple of layouts to share with you. Jenny used the letter “K” for a layout about her son’s kindergarten school year.

Jenny used Teacher’s Pet & Flashcard Alpha.

Kayla gave us all the drama and panic of a sliced of thumb and a trip to the InstaCare/Emergency Room.

Kayla

Just in case she included the story.

It was a typical summer day at the Chamberlain house. Chase and Aspen had the Griffiths boys over and were playing. I was cleaning the sink and Megan was playing at the kitchen table. Out of the blue I heard a loud crash and Megan screaming. She had stood up on the chair and had tipped it over backwards. I rushed over to her and could see that she had blood gushing from her finger. I knew that she needed immediate medical attention. I hollered for the big kids to come help me. We wrapped Megan’s hand in a towel and loaded her in my van. I sent Aspen and the Griffiths boys back over to their house to let Heidi know that I was on my way to the InstaCare. Chase volunteered to go with me and put pressure on Megan’s hand. He was such a brave brother and consoled her and cared for her the whole ride.

The nurses took us right to the trauma room when we got to the InstaCare and that’s when the reality of what was happening hit me. I had brought a 9 year old Chase with me to a bloody trauma! Megan had actually cut off the tip of her left middle finger! I hadn’t realized that a small portion of her finger tip had been cut off by the back of the chair. I had thought only her finger nail had been pulled off. Rob wasn’t answering his cell phone. He had just started a new job and was up in Park City for meetings. I couldn’t get a hold of Grandma Judy, so I called Aunt Natalie to have her come get Chase. And I didn’t have the finger tip so the doctor could sew it back on. Boy was I a mess!

I quickly called Heidi and asked her to go over to my house and see if she could find the finger tip. Aspen found it and I sent Aunt Natalie to go get it and bring it back to the doctor. The doctor was able to sew it back on, but warned us that it might not take and there was no guarantee if the nail would grow back either. A small portion of it didn’t take under the nail. But enough did and the nail grew back so it’s not too noticeable. It just looks like her nail is a little flat on that finger. We call it her poor sore finger because it’s very sensitive and hurts her at times.

Whether you have photos or not, these 2 layouts gave us plenty of ideas of how to do a photoless layout.

9.16.2015 Waterproofing Your Phone | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hey Friends!

Last month at our August ScrapTwister game, Chelle said,  “A few weeks back I heard from Steph (from the Daily Digi & Capturing Magic) about a waterproof phone case.  Well, I already had a life proof case.  In fact I’ve had two of them.  I LOVE taking photos with my phone in wet situations…like the pool & water rides.  But my life proof case is pretty complicated to use and quite expensive  (less than replacing a wet phone, but still…) ANYWAY…Steph said this phone case was affordable and worked great.  For just $10 I immediately ordered TWO.  (One for my husband and one for my daughter)  IT. IS. AWESOME.  SO easy to use.  Almost as easy as adding your phone to a Ziploc back.  AND I don’t have to take my phone out of its case to use it!

Photos are as clear as if my phone was not in the case:

I hope you find this tip useful.  Think of all the even more amazing digital scrapbooking photos you’ll be able to take and scrap. What could be better?

Photobombing! Get in there! | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hi1 So I know that photobombing isn’t really a “Words on Wednesday” kind of thing, but I just can’t resist. Instead of being the victim, why not be the initiator and add those photos to a fun new digital scrapbooking layout. Let me show you what our ladies came up with. I think the kiddoes would absolutely love to look through a book of photobombing layouts..

Karen (zippyoh) did double duty for us this month. She did two photobombing layouts. Look at how Rascal photo-bombed this layout with with her parents! Love it! She used Boho Summer & Boho Summer Alpha.

Here is Karen’s (zippyoh) 2nd layout. In this photo her hubby, Mark, got in on the action. She used Batter Up.

Word Art Heaven! | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hello Friends!

Do you love digital scrapbooking word art? Chelle has a bunch of them. Chelle tends to use the same font for the extra words along with a cluster. Put ’em together and what do you get? Perfect word art. When I know Chelle has a new collection being released, I wait patiently to see what word art she creates. Let me show you what our creative team made for layouts using one of Chelle’s fantastic word art.

The first layout is by Lisa. She used Chelle’s Green Thumb Collection. The word art fits in perfectly with the story Lisa’s layout tells.

Lisa

Here’s the Green Thumb Bundle and a closer look at the coordinating Green Thumb Word Art.

Jenny used the Roller Coasters and Cotton Candy collection for her layout. Her son’s facial expression really adds to the word art.

I bet if you check your Chelle’s Creation stash, you will find you already own some of Chelle’s word art. Take a few minutes and make a layout then share it with us in the Scrap Orchard Pin Gallery. #Chelle

Word MarkIt | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Have you tried Word Markit? It’s a cool app that let’s you type in a title or phrase. It will then show you what that word or phrase would look like with all of the fonts on your computer. Cool, huh? Can you imagine? I like to use the app just for fun. Silly, I know, but I’m easily entertained.  Let me show you how our creative team used it.

Look at Lisa’s before layout.

Creating Movement | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hello Friends!

Today I wanted to show you some ideas for creating movement on your digital scrapbooking layout. Titles or words can instantly add dimension and contrast. You can change the font or color or even make them wonky or use more than one color. Another option is to use words that help convey movement. Most of our layouts do represent activities. {sleeping, reading, playing, etc.} Chelle has many products will help you out. Let me show you what I mean.

Roxana’s “Wet & Wild” and “Splash” words add a colorful and descriptive action to her layout.

ccwowa10

Roxana used In the Pool. Chelle has coordinating In the Pool “Little People.”

cc_inthepool     cc_inthepool_lp

Now let’s look at Krista’s layout.  She created great movement in the layout using the angles of the slide photos. She also used little words “Climb, Slide, Play” to  convey movement.  Her title, “Sliding Down” adds texture to the layout.

krista

Krista used At the Park. Chelle also has coordinating “At the Park Little People.”

Using Photos to Replace your Titles | Digital Scrapbooking Words on Wednesday

Hello Friends!

This week we’ve been thinking about filling your titles with a photo. Out ladies’ came up with some fantastic digital scrapbooking layouts. The 2 layouts are so different in the way they used the photos. I think you’ll really love the ideas. They are just absolutely FUN! I asked Chelle for a brief explanation of how to do it. She said, “Just clip the photos to the letters the same way you would clip your photo to a photo spot in a template.” Easy peasey, right?

Not only did Donna use a photo in the shape of Florida. She also replaced the letters in her title “FLORIDA” with photos also. I love this new layout.

Donna used At the Beach.

cc_atthebeach.jpg

Next I have a layout by Roxana. Isn’t that a fun way to use “GOL” that is yelled when a team scores a goal. Great creativity.

Roxana (2)

Roxana used Kick It for her layout.

cc_kickit_preview_2post.jpg

I think that you next book you publish should have a few layouts using photo titles. Have a wonderful day!
