In the Shadows

Quite often in life, it’s the details that matter. That’s true in digital scrapbooking, also. In traditional paper scrapbooking, shadows are added by the light source used for viewing, so in digital pages, shadows need to be added to make a page look as they would on a traditional page. They can be tricky, but the right shadows make a world of difference. Take a look at the following pairs of pages that show a page first without shadows applied and then with. Look closely at each example to see how different thicknesses of elements are shadowed with different depths just as they would be in real life.

First, an example from Donna: she used Big City and a template from Scrapping with Liz. Look at the shadows on the photos compared to the thickness of the shadows on the felt pieces.  web_djp332_cc_NS_bigcity_due3_31_SwL_LotsofBlocksTemplate5_zpsfa2gdsg1web_djp332_cc_shadows_bigcity_due3_31_SwL_LotsofBlocksTemplate5_zpsmmnaq1bb

Next, a page from Carol using Under Construction . The intended thickness of the cluster of elements is really obvious is the second layout, as it should be, and is much more realistic that the un-shadowed version. noshadow_fixitnoshadow_fixit_SHADOWS

Finally, it’s easy to see the stacked effect of the elements on the next page. Wow, what a difference those shadows make! noshadow_birdiesnoshadow_birdies_SHADOWS

If you need help with shadows, the easiest thing to do is add Chelle’s Me & My Shadow Styles to your software. She has taken the guesswork out of shadowing for us, and they are perfect for taking your shadow skills up a notch.

03.26 Video Tutorial: Scrap On Your Phone

Spring has official arrived and we are almost done with another month in 2015. I can’t believe how quickly time goes by. If you are anything like me you try to capture as many memories as you can. With the boost in technology a lot of phones these days take really decent photos. Have you ever thought about using your phone to scrap those photos? Chelle of Chelle’s Creations is going to show you how to create a layout with in your phone in about 10 minutes. Have fun learning something new!

There are so many different programs that can help you scrap a layout besides the ones Chelle mentioned in her video. Here are a few the ladies used and the layouts they made.

Krista (kc71595) used Phonto and Photo Grid using a android device and created this adorable layout. I wish after a few videos I was able to create something so cute. She used the Down on the Farm kit, Down on the Farm {instaLife}, and Down on the Farm – Sounds {instaLife}.

Using the Zoo Crew Arctic {Journal Cards}, Karen (zippyoh) created this layout of a memorable vacation. She used PicStitch and Over on her phone.

I love to see personality in a layout. You can just feel the love between this mother and daughter in Jan’s (QuiltyMom) layout. For her layout she used Toe Picks & Figures 8s and PicStitch and InstaQuote. After playing around with it Jan found out that she didn’t care for the InstaQuote because it didn’t allow her to use the full image and if you look closely there is their logo on her page.

With so many different apps out there these days for you phones there is bound to be one that will fit your needs. When you have some free time pick up your phone and see what looks interesting to you and play around. You might just find a new way to quickly get some layouts done.

See you again in April.

The 3rd FREEBIE is available on my Facebook Fan Page.

Fleur de Violette

We’re taking a look back at a classic kit today: Fleur de Violette. It’s full of spring flowery goodness that will remind you of fond memories you’ve had and is great for enhancing your digital scrapbooking pages of a wide variety of topics. Take a look at what the Creative Team has to show you.

First, Mel had a fantastic photo of her and her two daughters doing a selfie. She applied a tint to the photo to give it an extra effect, and it looks perfect with our featured kit. I love her clusters of flowers on the top right and bottom left.  Smile-MMT-copy

Kayla has a couple of pages to show us, both using templates from Fiddle-Dee-Designs. The first one is a photo of her daughter Aspen taken at Easter, and the second is a close-up of her daughter Megan. Notice how she used the lined paper on each layout? I love that she lined up her journaling on the lines. EasterBlooms_Apr11_web_zps6a2e1c7eFlirtyGirl_Jan13_web

Here’s a closer look at the kit in the market, but let me point out that there’s also a bundle that includes some quickies and other great extras, and there are InstaLife cards and Journal Cards sold separately, great for printing and using in your daily albums or for using in your Project Life phone app. fleurdeviolettete

Collect App | Digital Scrapbook Resources

Hey Friends!

Almost 7 years ago I failed at Photo-A-Day 365.  Up to that point in the year I’d done pretty well.  I’d only missed a few days in the first 3 months.  And I kept up on the scrapping side of it, a 2 page layout for each week.  But the truth is, it was HARD!  Hard to remember to take the photos.  Hard to take the time to upload them from my camera to my computer.  So easy to forget.  So easy for something to be more important.

However, now things have changed.  There is a good camera on my phone which means I have a good camera with me almost always.  And while I still enjoy scrapping the memories we make, I also like to document the little things that make up our days.  Back in December I learned about an app that might make it easier to be successful at Photo-a-Day or P365.  BUT, things were still crazy in my life.  So I downloaded the Collect app and decided to start on January 1st.  Amazingly 3 month later I am still going strong.  And it is super easy.  Every afternoon I get a reminder to take a photo if I haven’t taken one yet.  Before I go to bed, I choose my favorite photo of the day and add it the Collect app…during that time I am usually thinking about our schedule for the next day and planning for what photo I’d like to take the next day.

But I think my favorite part of the app is the story-telling portion.  There is a place with every photo to add just a bit of the story (and more space below if necessary).  This “forces” me to be concise in telling the story of the photos…or just what I was thinking at the time.

So what will I do with these photos?

  • Sometimes this is just one photo from an event and I’ll be scrapping it as usual.

15_01_20_5thbday_2post_blurred

  • Your photos can be exported as one large calendar (which can be scrapped)…

2015-03-23 09.30.42

  • Or individual cards with the journaling (which can be scrapped, or just printed as is and tucked in pocket pages)

2015-03-23 09.31.28 2015-03-23 09.31.52

I liked my calendar so much, that I’ve added more calendars that first one.  I don’t know how many calendars you can create, but I have 3 right now.  In addition to my main album, I set up a calendar to keep the screenshots of my Couch to 5K workouts.  (You don’t have to have a photo for every day.  And you can have more than one photo each day.)  I’ll use these photos when I scrap about this journey to improve my fitness level.

2015-03-23 09.26.07

And I set up a calendar for my ‘other’ venture: Illustrated-Faith.  I probably won’t ever scrap these photos because I have the original book.  But I like having them all in one place where I can see them.  It keeps me accountable and motivated.

2015-03-23 09.26.19

And next fall I’ll start a “kindergarten year” calendar for my son.

I love how it gets me thinking about the moments I want to capture to tell the story of our lives.
