3.27 Tutorial: Easy Pencil Sketched Photos

3.27 Tutorial: Easy Pencil Sketched Photos

Hello Hello! Welcome to today’s tutorial! This is Jenn, aka jk703, and I can’t wait to share a fun and really easy tutorial for you today. You are going to love the Tutorial: Easy Pencil Sketched Photos! It is fun, and has a cool effect, plus I think it can give you a way to change up your layouts. Add a bit of different – :)  I hope you like it!

Here is my son, and right before he was done riding his bike, I was able to snap this picture. He is laughing at me for some reason, but I don’t know what it is, lol! I pry told him to get back on the bike and put his helmet back on for a picture. All I know is that he has an infectious smile, and the natural smiles are my favorite. This is the original picture that I will show the tutorial for Easy Pencil Sketched Photos. (This should work for both PS and PSE users – Krista provided instructions on how PSE differs. I will include that in parentheses).

PencilOriginal

First, make a duplicate of your photo, right click to duplicate or Command + J. This way the original is still available and not written over with layers and other changes.
Pencil1

Next, choose your duplicate layer in the Layers Palette. Then click on Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. This will cause your image to turn to a black and white version. (For PSE Users – Krista said that she went to Enhance>Adjust Color>Adjust Hue & Saturation. She then brought the saturation slider all the way to the left.)
Pencil2

Duplicate the desaturated layer.
Pencil3

Choose the top layer in the Layers Palette. Next, change it’s Blend Mode to Color Dodge.
Pencil4

Your image will have an almost over white black and white image. Like this:
4a

The top layer is still selected at this point. Next, click Image > Adjustments > Invert. (For PSE it’s Filter>Adjustment>Invert.)

Pencil5
Your image will turn ALL white right after inverting it. It’s normal. :)
Ok. Next, click on Filter > Blur > Guassian Blur.
Pencil5a

You will move the slider to a lower number, probably between 20-60, depending on your photo. Mine is around 46.
Pencil6

The image lost a lot of it’s detail when we added the blur. We will get some back. Create an Adjustment Layer for Levels. I used the half white/half black circle on the bottom of the Layers Palette to do this step.
Pencil6a

Now, choose the middle triangle under the chart. Slide it to the right. It will change the image, so watch and slide at the same time. It will bring some of the detail back
Pencil7

Here is what my image looks like at this point.

Pencil7a

I feel that the surrounding area takes away from him, so I’m going to bring a little more focus to the image. Select the layer just under the Levels Adjustment. Press D to change your foreground and background colors to the default setting.

Now, choose the Brush Tool, and use a Soft Round Brush, and you will paint with the foreground color, black. Mine is at a size of 715, and I originally had the opacity at 20%. As I worked with the brush, I lowered it to 5%. Play with this and your image. If you have erased too much, just switch up your brush color to white, and you can fix where you erased too much of the image. (For PSE Users, Krista said that for some reason she had to use the white to erase the background. When she used black it made the background black).
Pencil8

Here is what I ended up with. You can merge the layers and save them. Then you can use it for your layouts – framed images, polaroid versions, or blend it into the background. Have fun!

Pretty straight forward! It turns out great for such a simple technique. Here is what the CT created.

Lisa (kelseyll) created this soft and lovely layout. She used Bluebird On My Shoulder and the Curled Frames.

Girl Power

Today we’re looking at the perfect digital scrapbooking kit for highlighting your Girl’s achievements from earning merit badges to simply entertaining the family with a dance. Of course, with the cheerful greens and blues, it’s a great choice for your outdoor photos, too. Let’s see what the CTMs have done with Girl Power.

First, Melissa chose to use it for her photos of her Pathfinder ceremony when she was just a cute, young girl. I love the way she has clustered the various elements around her two photos and stapled the string to the paper in several places.

Next, Jenn made two pages for us of her little girl dancing for the family. Her little cutie loves to perform, and Jenn captured the memory beautifully using Girl Power. I love the little butterfly in this kit. bella-1girlsrock

Finally, Helen had some great outdoor photos of a walk in the woods, and she used Girl Power to make a gorgeous page to show them off. I love the plaid paper background, and I love the way she has the butterflies floating up to the pictures.  Helen-girl-power

Let’s take a closer look at this kit in the market. The preview image is linked. cc_girlpower_kit

Gallery Stand Outs | Digital Scrapbooking Layouts

Hello Ladies!

I’m so looking forward to green grass and blue sky and birds twittering in the trees.  I think Debbyrose agrees with me. Look at her beautiful digital scrapbooking layout. Love how unstructured it is, yet it still has some formal shaping to it. {I hope that makes sense, I meant it as a compliment.)

I found another digital scrapbooking layout that agrees with our shared desire to have winter over for this year. I like Zippyoh’s used of the sunburst rays and her use of chevrons.

Best Practical Jokes | Digital Scrapbooking Resource Ideas

Hello Friends!

Are you part of a family who loves joking around? Are you always pulling a prank on someone? Is April Fool’s Day your favorite holiday? This week we challenged our creative team to tell us via a digital scrapbooking layout about a funny moment in their lives. Let me show you what they came up with.

First, Roxana’s LO is a local political story. According to the latest news the organization/politican in charge of designating areas between the  2 ares of the city, said we would now be part of Surco and we (the residents) are all to decorate street signals, logos, banners and topiairies that are  planted all around our neighborhood with “Surco.” I wonder if he realized we were 4 miles a part.

Roxana

She used: Lucky Me & the arrows from Putt-Putt.

Tammy was watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with her son. During the movie, Harry is transported into the memories of another student and the scenes are in black and white. My son asked why the scenes were black & white, but Harry was still in color. I answered that the world used to be all black and white – you know, like when you see old photos. Then one day, the world turned colored. That’s why when I was a kid, there are black and white photos and then all of a sudden, they are in color. I felt so bad, because he really believed me! Poor guy…we still joke around about the world being in black and white in the “old days!”

Tammy

She used Rainbow Neutrals, Game On, Jump Zone, Basic Black Alpha, Wet Paint Alpha.

Jenny’s kids got the best of her. Brayden and Tony like to play jokes. Last year the joke was on me. After breakfast I felt that Brayden was watching my every move, so I was sure that I was in for something. I went to go brush my teeth. The second I put my toothbrush in my mouth, I spit out the toothpaste. I turned around and they were both laughing at me. Brayden giggles and says “We put salt on your toothbrush!” He was so proud of his joke. The look on his face was priceless.

Jenny

She used Pearly Whites.

cc_pearlywhites_preview_2post

Last I have Mel N. Her practical joke is that each year at Boy Scout camp someone’s tent goes up a tree. No one claims responsibility but miraculously it keeps happening!

Mel N

She used the Great Outdoors Bundle.

What funny story or joke could you create a layout for?

Scrap Skills: Using a Large & or Letter

I LOVE using large characters on a digital scrapbooking page, don’t you? Chelle’s Creative Team members have been making pages with such features to inspire us. Let’s take a look!

First, Kimberly used a font on her computer for her “&”. She sized the font up to around 200, simplified the layer, and then adjusted size with the aspect ratio turned OFF to make the letter a little more customized. She also recolored the sunburst paper using a hue/saturation adjustment layer. She used Chelle’s At the Park kit for her page. 2013_08_Cheer-Jump_zps77e56e29

Next, Jan used a large “&” in her title. She used Chelle’s Lovin’ from the Oven and the matching {stripes & plaids} for her page about a delicious treat at a very magical place. I love the way she made the “&” stand out by making it larger than the other letters in the title. sweetampyummy

Heather used a large “C” for emphasis on her page since the page was about making cupcakes with her daughter. I love the fun feel of her page and the way the elements seem to pop off the page.heatherC

Finally, Jenn wasted no time in making a page about her son’s pi day birthday this year. You know, it was ONLY last week – way to go Jenn! She used Chelle’s One Year Older to make her page, and she used her son’s age as the large numbers on the page. I absolutely adore the way the numbers look like tissue paper stapled and stitched to the page.  32_2014_12BDAY_600_zpsc3554584

Feeling inspired? If you make a page with Chelle’s kits and this technique, be sure to post it to the gallery at Scrap Orchard and tag your page with #chelle. I would love to see it and leave you some love.
